Lisa Andersen

Lisa Andersen is a legend and the inspiration for the Roxy brand. Her feminine style and athleticism laid the foundation for modern women's surfing in the 1990's, and she's still carrying the torch forward as our worldwide ambassador.

Lisa has been in the limelight since 1986, when she racked up over 30 National Scholastic Surfing Association trophies in under a year. With competition on hold for another day at the #ROXYpro Gold Coast we decided to chase waves further south (any excuse for a little roadtrip!)

Byron Bay Lay Day

We packed the cars with all of the essentials; plenty of boards, our favorite POPsurf bikinis, healthy snacks and some perfect roadtrippin’ tunes.

Byron Bay Lay Day

As we wound our way along the coast - stopping for a few necessary surf checks - we soaked up yet another beautiful day of Aussie sunshine and good times.

Byron Bay Lay Day

It wasn’t long before we sighted the iconic Byron Bay lighthouse and we couldn’t be more excited, it marked our surf check destination and the anticipation to get into the water was almost too much to handle. With the lighthouse offering views across two epic surf spots, Watego’s to our left and Tallows to our right.

Byron Bay Lay Day

Tallows was picking up the southerly swell and blowing out, making Watego’s the easy choice. On offer, a cosy sheltered beach with peeling waves for longboarding. It was the best place to settle in for the day.

What better way to celebrate 25 Years than with a kickin’ party and some cake?!

#25YearsofROXY Party

On the first official day of competition here on the Gold Coast, we chose the popular Komune resort as our backdrop to throw an epic birthday beach bash.

With the sun setting over the Pacific, the crowd beginning to swell and DJ Claire Elliott spinning some of our party favorites, we enjoyed a few poolside cocktails as we soaked up another perfect evening here on the Gold Coast.

As the party hit full swing, we held an exciting fashion parade featuring our latest ROXY POPsurf collection. The crowd was also treated to an exclusive preview to next season’s range which will be released later in the year.

This morning kicked off early with some much needed yoga on the beach. ROXY team riders Kelia and Monyca joined over 60 people to stretch it out on the beautiful sands of Rainbow Bay. The sun was shining, the tunes were pumping and stretches were at an all time high as participants were testing out their moves on their new ROXY yoga mats. Gold Coast local, Crystal O’Rourke lead the group through a series of poses to wake up the body and bring the alignment and strength needed for the long week of surfing ahead at the #ROXYPro.

After yoga, all the participants enjoyed a few freebies from our sponsors; refreshing cold pressed juices from Organic Avenue and delicious Blue Dinosaur Paleo bars to power them through the rest of the day as the #ROXYpro commences here at Snapper Rocks.

Kelia ‘Sister’ Moniz is the epitome of effortless style and grace. Our favorite lady logger had mastered the art of hanging ten at an early age. At one stage, on the shores of Waikiki’s Queens Beach, she had more toes over the nose of her board than her age.

With equal parts happiness and humility, the multi-talented Hawaiian has become one of the most versatile surfers, notching up back to back 2012 and 2013 World Titles.

As she flawlessly cross-steps her way to the nose, (making it look all too easy) she does so with unfailing Hawaiian charm. A big smile, the spirit of Aloha and her relaxed style are what make her so incredible to watch in the water.

‘Watching Sister surf is like watching the most beautiful ballet you could ever see but she’s doing it on water. It’s something everyone should get to see’. Stephanie Gilmore

Kelia inherited her nickname "Sister" as she is the only girl in a family of four brothers. What's made it stick is that it represents exactly what she has become to her fellow ROXY team riders and friends around the globe.

That’s right – it’s our silver anniversary, and what an amazing 25 years it’s been!

From the mountains of Europe, to the Pacific islands and the Hawaiian princesses who first graced the waves, to our current and future athletes and ambassadors, our girls are the original heart breakers and wave chasers.

They are the muses that started not only a brand but a movement for women the World over.

To commemorate our 25th year, we are celebrating three characteristics of ROXY we believe are manifested through our most iconic athletes, Lisa Andersen, Kelia Moniz, Stephanie Gilmore - inspirational, stylish and strong women.

Plus with 12 World surfing titles between them, who better to represent what ROXY has come to stand for over our 25 year history.

From the introduction of the world’s first ladies board short in 1990, (to which Lisa was the muse) to becoming 4x World Champion from 1994-1999, Lisa Andersen is a legend and not only an inspiration to us, but also to girls carving a future in the sport.

In 1995, Lisa became the first woman to grace the cover of Surfer Magazine and was named one of the 25 most influential surfers of all time, sitting amongst surfing royalty with Tom Carroll and Mark Richards.

When the competition was put on standby due to small conditions, we spent the second day of the ROXY Pro France in beautiful Basque country, a region in the southwest of France known for its chocolate, cheese and wine!

Basque Country

Our first stop led us to Bayonne, a very small town that is known for its chocolate. We visited l’Atelier du Chocolat, a chocolate workshop where we saw how caco beans were transformed to one of our all time-favorite desserts: rich chocolate!

Basque Country

At the end of the visit, we tasted dozens of different chocolates all made on site at l’Atelier du Chocolat. Our favorite was the caramel chocolate – it was unbelievable how rich and creamy it was! We also tried chocolate with Espelette pepper (Espelette is a village in Basque country famous for its pepper), chocolate with Pasoa (local wine made with passion fruits), chocolate with Armagnac (French liquor) and too many more types of chocolate to count!

Basque Country Basque Country Basque Country Basque Country

After we filled up on chocolate, we made just a little more room to try a traditional dessert of this region, called Basque cake. We stopped in Bidart, another very small town close to Biarritz that is also a renown surf spot. We visited a basque Moulin named Bassilour, where basque cakes named "gateau basque" are made. These delicious cakes are similar to a pie and are filled with fresh cream or cherries and made by scratch in a centuries-old castle.

The tools required to make the cakes are more than 1700 years old! We watched how it took corn and transformed it into flour, using a local stream as the only power source to run the machines. We couldn’t get over the beauty of the Moulin and the surrounding creek – and the basque cakes were pretty amazing as well!

Exploring Basque country left us pretty full – we are giving ourselves a full day off from eating any more desserts! Or at least we can try!

Byron Bay

It was a lay day at the #ROXYpro Gold Coast so the Semis were just going to have to wait for another day and more waves, which was okay by us because we knew exactly where to find them…

We packed our things and headed to Byron Bay for a little #DowntimeDownUnder with the ROXY team. It was 6 girls: Stephanie Gilmore, Monyca Eleogram, LeeAnn Curren, Lisa Andersen, Kelia Moniz, and Bruna Schmitz, their boards, and all the other essentials needed for a road trip along the coast. Backseat driver, Lisa Andersen retold stories about old camp days skinny-dipping at night and playing tug of war in the sand setting the stage for lots to laugh about and reminisce on.

boards

It was a scenic drive with Mt. Wanning’ silhouette in the distance, ridiculous valleys on either side, and Lennox, considered Australia’s surfing Mecca, set as the destination. You know, the place where the shortboarding revolution came about and where longboards moved from long to short. A nice place to revel in the history of surfing that Australia is dripping with, and also marked our first wave-checked of the morning.

Team Surf

After suiting up, and by that we mean bikinis, no need for wetsuits at this place in the height of Summer, the girls decided to head to a ‘secret spot’ where Stephanie Gilmore could ride a point break and get some practice in before the ROXY pro Gold Coast semifinals. Everyone obliged, because what doesn’t sound enticing about and open line-up and just your friends progressing together. Thanks Steph, you were so right!

Rip It Up Board Meeting

The spot proved to be epic, pumping waves, just a few of your closest friends, and plenty of great surf shots for the team to revel in afterwards. Both LeeAnn and Stephanie put on a show trying some aerials and giving tan-obsessed beach goers and eyeful.

Rip It Up Board Meeting Air Time

A few hours passed, and lunch seemed like a great idea so we cruised to local favorite ‘The Roadhouse’ for some tacos plates and nourish platters. We quickly realized, there’s really nothing like organic roadside food, reggae music, and coconut coffee (no need for any sugar here!). After filling our faces we were on the road again, with our eye on the prize: BYRON BAY.

Coffee time Heading out

As we approached the main street in Byron we felt right at home. A sunny. laid-back Santa Cruz vibe Byron Bay was just what we needed to get away from it all. As we weaved and wrapped ourselves along the coast we could enjoy a flurry of ocean activity including dolphins and turtles. We pulled up at Wategos Beach and we knew we had found the spot. It felt a bit like Kelia’s Aussie version of Waikiki and we couldn’t have been more content.

Coffee time Heading out

After a long day of surfing, eating, and road tripping, we set back up to Coolangatta to await the next call of the ROXY Pro. Stay tuned, because Semi finals is next and both Roxy team riders Stephanie Gilmore and Bianca Buitentag are in the lineup. See more from the Pro here
