BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Sunday, May 13, 2012) – Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, has taken out the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro over Coco Ho (HAW), 21, by a score of 14.10 to 14.03 in peaky one-to-three foot (.5 metre) waves at the primary venue of Barra da Tijuca.

Event No. 5 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women's World Championship Tour, the Billabong Pro Rio culminated in a thrilling fashion this afternoon with both Fitzgibbons and Ho exchanging the Final's lead multiple times before the hooter sounded.

In need of a high 7-point ride with just minutes remaining in the heat, Fitzgibbons bashed a blowing lefthander on her backside, notching a 7.93 out of 10 to take the elite win, her second of the year.

“That was so crazy and Coco (Ho) had me on the ropes for sure,” Fitzgibbons said. “I just had my fingers crossed and knew there would be one towards the end. I made a few mistakes and it happens in Finals but I was able to recover there at the end. I’m so excited.”

Fitzgibbons, current No. 2 on the ASP Women’s WCT, has significantly narrowed the gap between her and current ASP frontrunner Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, but remained humble in regards to her chase for the 2012 ASP World Title.

“This makes the World Title race more interesting, but thinking ahead, it’s still pretty far to go,” Fitzgibbons said. “There are still a couple of events, but to get a win, it’s an amazing result. To win at Bells too, it’s been an awesome year so far.”

Ho, who was ranked 12th on the ASP Women's WCT ratings before the Billabong Rio Pro, had yet to advance beyond the Quarterfinals this year, but her Runner-Up finish to Fitzgibbons vaults the young Hawaiian to 9th in the world and restores her confidence to appropriate levels.

“This result really opens things up for me,” Ho said. “I’ve been having a really tough year and I’m stoked to get into this Final. This is my best result of the year and this has been an important event for me. Congrats to Sally on her win.”

Carissa Moore (HAW), 19, last year’s Billabong Rio Pro winner and reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, was edged out of a hard-fought battle against Fitzgibbons in their high-scoring Semifinal affair. Both competitors posted big-scores in the dying seconds of the heat, but it was Fitzgibbons who earned the best of the exchange, handing Moore and equal 3rd place result.

“I think we all want to make the Final and it’s disappointing,” Moore said. “I’ve lost to Sally (Fitzgibbons)twice this year and I’ve just got to keep trying in the next couple of events and that’s it.”

Moore, who was dominant over the course of 2011, has yet to find a win this year, but remains focused on attaining a strong performance to end out the season.

“I think it’s been a bunch of things this year,” Moore said. “I think finding the right waves is one thing overall and I need to switch it up and bring something different out.”

Alessa Quizon (HAW), 18, Billabong Rio Pro wildcard, put in an incredible performance at this year’s event, tearing through the world’s best female surfers and finding her way into the Semifinals. Quizon put up a good fight against fellow Hawaiian Coco Ho, but ultimately fell during last minute exchange, finishing with a respectable equal 3rd place finish overall.

“This has been an amazing event for me,” Quizon said. “I had nothing to lose and it’s been a great learning experience for me and I’m happy that I made it to the Semifinals. I could tell that Coco (Ho) was getting the scores that she needed and I was looking for one big score and I just didn’t find it. Sometimes it happens that way.”

The next stop on the 2012 ASP Women's World Championship Tour is the Roxy Pro Biarritz from July 10 - 14, 2012. GO SALLY!!

Longboard icon Kassia Meador floats serenely across the majestic waves in surfer and filmmaker Bruce Muller’s Echo. The visual meditation is the first of four shorts teasing the release this fall of Frequencies, an experimental documentary and visual essay by Muller shot at prime surfing destinations across Southern California. Starring Meador and with an original score from Los Angeles-based psyche-pop trio E.S.P, Frequencies aims to explore how man can find synergy with nature’s cycles. “Their are so many different frequencies all around us at all times: ocean waves, sound waves, light waves, infrared and many others outside our range, but all have an effect on us,” explains professional surfer and passionate photographer Meador. “There are many parallels we can connect between surfing and navigating life.” Having previously made the music video for Warpaint’s single “Elephant”, Florida-native Muller combined his love of surfing and the fantastical films of Ridley Scott, Andrei Tarkovsky and Akira Kurosawa in the upcoming feature. “We exist in a world that is vast and dynamic,” he says. “We’re using surfing as a medium to explore how we harness these energies and the effects they have on us."

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) has won the ASP 6-Star Hunter Ports Women’s Classic over Malia Manuel (HAW) in 2 foot (1 meter) surf at Merewether beach, Newcastle today. The Final was a fairly one-sided affair with Fitzgibbons dominating the wave selection and execution, this is her 2nd ASP 6-Star win in a row after taking out the Australian Open in Manly in February. Global fashion and action sports apparel brand ROXY proudly invites girls to let the sea set them free and have the opportunity to live the dream of a ROXY girl.

ROXY’s “Let the Sea Set You Free” contest is a global social media initiative that embraces digital and multi media platforms. Girls over the age of 18 will be able to submit videos, photos and essays that creatively demonstrate why they embody the ROXY spirit and what makes them the right choice to experience a life-changing adventure.

The contest launches today February 24, 2012 at the Roxy Beach Tent at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks, QLD, Australia from 10am. All girls are welcome to enter the tent to sit back and watch the surfing, hang out with our Roxy Girls including Sally Fitzgibbons, Lisa Andersen, Philippa Anderson, Kelia Moniz and Monyca Byrne-Wickey, get their nails done at the Beach Toes Nail bar, read the latest Cosmopolitan, get styled in the latest Roxy product, get their photo taken and sent to their Facebook account, and most of all find out how they can maximize their chances of winning the contest.

Submissions will be accepted through April 8, 2012. The public will vote for their favorite girls. The top 75 finalists globally, determined by fans and a select ROXY panel of judges, will then be challenged to create a one minute video that explains how the sea sets them free using music and imagery provided by ROXY. On June 15, one winner per region from the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions will be announced.

Three girls will win a life-changing adventure which includes a trip to Biarritz, France for the Roxy Pro surf competition in July, the opportunity to learn to surf the best waves in the world, a chance to meet the ROXY pro athletes, up to $5,000 USD, and a second surprise adventure trip. The winners will also host ROXY video segments as a face and voice for the brand and experience life the way the Roxy girls do.

Today, January 19, 2012, our community lost an icon. Sarah Burke, freeskiing pioneer, six-time X Games gold medalist and beloved wife, daughter, aunt and friend passed away. Sarah was truly a legendary athlete, role model and an inspiration. She was everything so many of us aspire to be. Sarah brought worldwide recognition and validation to the sport she so loved. Every ski athlete chosen to represent his or her country at the 2014 Sochi Olympics will feel her influence. Without her, the sport of freeskiing would not be included.
Sarah is a pioneer of her generation. Her life and legacy embody the defining spirit of action sports; a movement of individuals driven to innovate, master and explore the frontier of physical possibility. Sarah’s love of skiing took her life to amazing places. Her accomplishments on skis continue to inspire girls everywhere to believe in themselves and follow their hearts. Her passing is not a cause to pack up our skis, but rather a reason to step-in and ski for Sarah and the dreams that inspired her star to shine. Sarah did so much for females and winter sports during her time with us; now we are asking for your help.
Sarah leaves behind her beloved husband Rory, loving parents Jan and Gordon and her supportive sister Anna. Roxy’s Sally Fitzgibbons Hands 94 Million Rupiah Cheque to Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation (KBSTC) on Behalf of Quiksilver Indonesia

On Tuesday November 1st, Roxy team rider and 2011 ASP Women’s Championship runner up Sally Fitzgibbons from Australia had the honor of handing over a whopping Rp. 94,830,204 (around $11,000 AUD) cheque on behalf of Quiksilver Indonesia to Pak Agung Tresna of the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation, in support of the on-going effort to preserve the endangered sea turtles of Bali and ensure their survival.
